Every year since we started four years ago, we've tried a selection of new apples on our farm. We've had some great success with some and are waiting to see the results when they begin to produce. We have had really great success with Gemini, Goodland, Odyssey and Norkent. Prairie Magic is a new one for us that we hope will be as much of a winner as the others.
We like to hedge our bets and have a couple of trees that produce fruit and flower at different times.
This year we've chosen to only bring in dwarf varieties. They work well for us on the farm and we think that they work as well, if not better, in the city.
Gemini Apple
Excellent fresh eating apple which stores into the following year. Medium sweetness and fruit mature in August. Zone 2.
Goodland Apple
A well tested variety (this cultivar was introduced in the 1950's), Goodland is great for fresh eating and storing. It is resistant to fireblight and is cold hardy. Zone 3.
Odyssey Apple
Producing medium to large fruit the taste has been compared with a gala apple. This crisp apple bears fruit in late August and can be stored into the first part of the following year. Zone 3.
Prairie Magic Apple
Prairie Magic is a new variety that we are trying on our farm for the 2016 year. We have high hopes for this one. By all accounts, it has excellent flavour. It ripens mid to late September. Zone 3.
